The Maasai Mara National Reserve, located in southwestern Kenya, is one of the most renowned and breathtaking safari destinations in the world. The Maasai Mara covers approximately 1,510 square kilometers of protected wilderness and is contiguous with the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.

Maasai Mara National Reserve derives its name from the river that crosses it, the Mara River, which is named in honour of the Maasai people. Its diverse ecosystem which includes grasslands, forests, and riverine areas, supports a wide variety of wildlife, making it an ideal location for game viewing. Its rolling savannah expanse with golden grass inhabited with wildlife is a sight to behold.

The Maasai Mara is home to the The Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino), cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, and numerous species of antelope. One of the most spectacular natural events in the world, the Great Migration, involves over 1.5 million wildebeest, along with hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, making their annual journey from the Serengeti to the Maasai Mara in search of greener pastures. This awe-inspiring migration typically occurs between July and October and is an unforgettable adventure for safari-goers.

While the Maasai Mara offers excellent game viewing all year-round, the time to visit the Kenya´s premier game park depends on your personal interests:

  • January to February: These months are known for their dry weather and excellent game viewing as animals gather around water sources.
  • March to June and November to December: The low season offers fewer crowds and lower prices. While there may be some rain, the lush landscapes and abundance of newborn animals provide unique safari experience.
